Doug operated his own blog before Jalopnik columns. One of my favorite articles was on the Corolla XRS and how it relates to his Elise. And now a direct quote from Doug:
Very true (both about the photo and about the fact that wagons always win). The photo has been changed. I've always wanted a Matrix XRS. I just wish they had offered it with AWD, like they did the base model.
Hopefully you get a Matrix XRS. With the 6 Speed stick and the 2ZZ (164-180 hp). Hot hatch from japan that has HP. I'm getting hard at that thought already. I'm going to Craigslist now to longingly stare at them.

"no one wants a sporty Corolla"... I beg to differ... I might even buy one!

Well, if I save enough for a Matrix XRS, it will cost roughly the same as a AE86/AE85. My parents would allow the XRS.....as its "newer". I still would like the AE86.

An AE86 looks very innocent for "parents". Also tell them you want "an older Corolla" and I'm sure it would be alright.
And don't get an AE85 really... you want a 4AGE and a LSD.

It doesn't get much more innocent looking than that really :)

I know :)
Asking for "an older car" with a famous name that doesn't seem too sporty is usually a good way to bargain a fun car with your parents.
